“Isaid if you got us off this island, I’d kiss you,” Kayla said, backtracking.

“That’s not what you said. The deal was if I got the engine working.”

She gave me a doubtful glance.

I raised my hands in surrender. “Hey, if you don’t want to honor your bets, that’s fine by me. Tells me what kind of person you are.”

“I honor my bets, mister.”

“Prove it,” I said with a grin.

She arched a sassy eyebrow, then crawled across the sand, stalking me like a panther. She moved close and planted her full, warm lips against my cheek. In a breathy voice, she whispered, “Thank you.”

Her touch was electric. Not the kiss I had hoped for, but I wasn’t complaining.

She pulled away and sat beside me.

“So, how did you find yourself in this part of the world?” I asked.

Kayla groaned and rolled her eyes. “I’m not sure if I should tell a cop this story.”

"Now, that definitely sounds intriguing."

Her cautious eyes surveyed me. "Okay. I’ll tell you my story if you promise not to arrest me."

I laughed, not sure if she was joking. "I have no jurisdiction here."

"True, but when you get back to the States, you could tell the relevant authorities where I am."

I couldn’t tell if she was pulling my leg. "Maybe you shouldn’t tell me. I’d hate for you to have to kill me to keep me quiet.”

She laughed. “Do I look like a murderer?”

I looked her dead in the eyes. "You look like you could be dangerous.”

A slight smirk tugged her sinful lips. “That might be true.”

We stared at each other for a long moment.

“You're serious, aren't you?" I said.

"As a heart attack."

"Nobody ends up in a place like this without a story," JD said. "You were out of options."

Her eyes flicked to him. He'd hit the nail right on the head. "You don’t miss much, do you?”

Jack grinned. "Goes with the job.”

Kayla smirked again. "Okay, Detectives. What's my story?"

My eyes narrowed as I sized her up. "You were hanging out with the wrong crowd. Probably that ex-boyfriend of yours.” Judging by the guilty look on her face, I was hovering over the target. “He was into something illegal and pulled you into it."

She looked impressed. "Go on."

"You stuck your neck out for him, only to be betrayed. But by that time, the damage was done, and you were wanted in the States." It was general enough to be accurate.

Her mind was blown. Kayla looked at me in disbelief. "Geez, is there anything about me you can't figure out?”

I gave a modest shrug. “I don’t know your birthday.”

“April 22. I’m not telling you the year.”

“So what happened?”

She hesitated a moment. “I have your word…?”

I raised innocent hands. “I just want to find my friend and get off this island. Your past is your past.”

Her eyes narrowed as she looked into mine, trying to read me. “I’m probably going to regret this, but here goes…” She took a deep breath. "My boyfriend at the time, Silas, had gotten a DUI and lost his license.
